Trust and reputation in online networks: Backfeed and Open Badges

How do you show who you are and what you can do online? More and more online offerings and services are being organised in terms of reputation. From AirBnB, Uber and Lyft to Reddit and Stack Overflow, the applications and services of the Internet and decentralised cultures are depending on reputation and credentials. This raises all kinds of important questions about the nature and role of reputation, both in online communities and beyond. These systems span jurisdictional and national boundaries.

In this session we’ll be discussing Open Badges, a way to show what you know and can do in a verified ways, and about the kind of blockchain technologies exemplified through Backfeed. Together, they can enable new meritocratic governance structures and reputation economies that are more transparent and dynamic than the traditional model. Following two short presentation, we will open up the discussion with the audience in order map out the questions of this emerging, but critically important class of services.
